How I Overcame My Food Fears

Overcoming food fears or food-related anxieties can be challenging, but with determination and the right approach, it is possible to make progress and improve your relationship with food. In my case, it took several months for me to even drop one fear food. But, with time, there are some key steps you can take to address and overcome your food fears.

1. EAT THEM WITH “SAFE” FOODS:

With coconut, for example, I FEARED all the fats that came with it, even though it’s a major ingredient in my culture and I simply love the taste of it. So, I incorporated it into my “safe meals,” such as yogurt bowls and oatmeal. Gradually, as I NOTICED THERE WERE NO SUDDEN CHANGES OR DETRIMENTAL EFFECTS TO EATING THIS FEAR FOOD, I incorporated it more freely, sometimes feeling so comfortable that I ordered an entire coconut bowl as a meal (the very one in the image)!

2. EAT WITH FAMILY AND FRIENDS:

Eating with others (and not eating pre-planned food) takes you out of your head and into a larger perspective, where you notice food isn’t just fuel or an enemy or fear. Instead, you’ll notice how food is a form of unity for yourself and others. SPONTANEITY is key.

3. FOLLOW THE RIGHT INFLUENCERS:

I followed MANY a number of influencers who promoted intuitive eating, HA recovery, and trying new recipes to ease my way into discovering my love for old foods again. However, this information felt like OVERLOAD. So, I unfollowed a few, keeping only a reasonable amount so that I never felt overwhelmed as I approached my feed to better my ED recovery journey.

It took time, and sometimes I never wanted to eat the new recipes I cooked/baked, but it gradually got easier to the point where I wasn’t scared of trying new foods (especially high-carb, baked goods) because I made my social media feed a safe place to feel inspired!

4. STOPPED OVERTHINKING.

HAD SOMEONE ELSE COOK FOR ME SO I DID NOT THINK TOO MUCH IN THE DETAILS: self-explanatory. just live life and move on!
