David and Goliath by Malcolm Gladwell

Feeling like an underdog?

A lot of us tend to think that underdogs have few chances of winning. They’re destined to be a loser. I mean, they’re an underdog for a reason…right?

I had thought the SAME thing too, until I read “David and Goliath” by Malcolm Gladwell. The well-known, biblical story of David and Goliath is about how David, an ordinary boy (who’s not even what you can call a soldier), defeats Goliath, a strong giant, in a one-on-one battle, using his intelligence and small, nimble body to his advantage. In this book, Gladwell finds real-life instances where the underdogs (or the "Davids") won, and where DISADVANTAGES BECOME ADVANTAGES, AND ADVANTAGES CAN BECOME DISADVANTAGES.

This book shifted my mindset into believing that everyone has an equal chance at winning at something, as long as you try to use what you have to your advantage and see every situation as an opportunity.

For example, let's say your parents tested positive for COVID-19 and had to quarantine/isolate themselves. YOU would have to take on the responsibility of their household chores, like cooking, cleaning, and laundry. This sounds super stressful, taking on so many things in such a short time for everyone in the household, but this can also be a learning experience for you and can prepare you for taking care of yourself when you live on your own in college/an apartment, or if you become a parent one day and have to take care of your family.

“…being an underdog…opens doors and creates opportunities…and permits things that might otherwise seem unthinkable.” -Malcolm Gladwell

Final Takeaway

YOU are in control of your thoughts and actions. Everything that happens in your life happens for a reason and helps you to grow. Remember that.

So, the next time a situation arises, ask yourself, "How is this benefiting me? This is an opportunity for me because it helps me to grow in these ways..."
